A common adage for investors is "Invest in founders, not their ideas." 

500 Startups invested in over 1693 startups. If founders are so important, then how important is founder diversity

How much more likely is it that "unicorns" will emerge with greater founder diversity?

In our data visualisations created from public information about the 500 Startups, we look at various factors that influence diversity within a community of founders. 

Age

500S founders have a wide range of ages. While 60.9% of the founders are aged 26-35, 26.3% are 36-45. On either end, 5.5% are over 55, and 6.5% are under 25.

Gender

This remains a gender-biased industry: only 25% of the teams have a single woman in them.


Race Division

Racial composition of 500S founders mirror closely the racial composition of the USA. 55.1% of 500S founders are white. 25.5% are Asian/Pacific Islanders, 9.6% are Hispanic and 2.7% are black.

Education

Our startup founders have a diverse range of educational degrees. 47% of the founders have a Bachelor's degree. 32% have a Master's degree; 3.2% dropped out of undergraduate college and 4.3% have a vocational degree.
